Touchscreen Test

Find dead zones, count simultaneous touches and check full screen coverage.

About this tool

Draw over the test area with your finger. Each touch draws its own coloured line, and the grid squares turn green as you cover them. The counters show the touches active right now, the most at once, the share of the grid covered and the input type the browser detects. Use Full screen to reach the edges, and Clear to start again.

How to spot touchscreen problems

A healthy touchscreen draws smooth, unbroken lines wherever you drag. Lines that break, stutter or jump in the same spot every time point to a dead zone, often caused by a cracked or failing digitizer, the touch layer on top of the display. Cover the whole grid slowly, including the corners and edges, to find any area that does not respond. To test multi-touch, put several fingers down together. Most phones and tablets track five to ten simultaneous touches, and the number the device reports is shown under the test. Ghost touches, where the screen reacts without being touched, are often caused by moisture, a poorly fitted screen protector or electrical noise from a cheap charger, so try again unplugged with a clean, dry screen before assuming a fault. The test also works with a mouse or stylus, so you can check a pen too. Honest limits: a browser can only see touches the operating system passes on, so problems in the system's own gestures may not show here. Nothing is recorded or sent. The dead pixel test checks the display itself, the vibration test checks the motor and the mouse test checks clicks and scrolling.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my touchscreen for dead spots?

Slowly draw over the whole screen in full-screen mode. Any area where the line breaks or the grid square does not turn green is not responding.

How many touch points does my phone support?

Most phones and tablets support five to ten. Put several fingers down together and see the highest number the test reaches.

What causes ghost touches?

Common causes are moisture, a damaged or badly fitted screen protector, a cracked digitizer or electrical noise from a charger.

Is anything saved?

No. Your drawing exists only on this page and nothing is recorded or sent.
