What WebP is for
Google published WebP in 2010 to make web images smaller. In practice it is typically 25โ35% smaller than JPEG at matched visual quality, and it does something JPEG cannot: support transparency. That combination is why it has largely replaced PNG for web graphics that need an alpha channel, where PNG files are often enormous.
Support is no longer a concern โ every current browser displays WebP, and has for years. The remaining friction is outside the browser: some older desktop software, printers and photo frames still do not recognise it, which is the usual reason for converting the other way.
Conversion is not free
JPEG and WebP are both lossy, so converting between them re-compresses the image and loses a little each time. Converting a JPEG to WebP and back is measurably worse than the original, even at high quality.
Convert once, from the best source you have, and keep that original. Converting to PNG does not lose anything further, but it will not recover what an earlier lossy step already discarded โ it just produces a much larger file containing the same degraded image.
