Crop to the ratio the destination expects rather than letting the platform do it. Automatic cropping tends to cut through faces and text.
Cropping without wrecking the image
Cropping only removes pixels β it never adds any, so the result stays as sharp as the original. What it does reduce is resolution: crop to a quarter of the frame and you have a quarter of the pixels, which starts to matter if the result then gets displayed large.
Start from the highest-resolution version you have rather than a copy that has already been through a messaging app. And if the file also needs to be smaller in bytes, resize and compress it after cropping, not before β you want to compress once, at the final dimensions.

Can I rotate a photo as well as crop it?
Yes β rotate in 90-degree steps and flip horizontally or vertically. Do it before cropping, since rotating resets the crop box.
