About this text to speech tool
Paste any text, choose a voice, and it is read aloud. Speed, pitch and volume are all adjustable, and you can pause and resume mid-sentence.
The speech is produced by your own device using the voices already installed on it β the same ones behind your operating system's accessibility features. Nothing is uploaded, there is no character limit imposed by a server, and it keeps working with no internet connection once the page has loaded.
What it is genuinely good for
- Proofreading. Hearing your own writing read back catches clumsy sentences, repeated words and missing ones far better than re-reading does β your eye skips over mistakes your ear will not.
- Accessibility. A quick way to listen to an article, email or document rather than read it.
- Pronunciation. Switching to a voice in another language gives you a reasonable model for how a word or phrase sounds.
- Multitasking. Listening to notes or a draft while doing something else.
What it is not is a studio voiceover tool. Device voices are clear and natural enough for listening, but they are not the AI voices used in commercial narration.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download the speech as an MP3?
No, and no browser-based tool can do this properly β the Web Speech API plays audio without exposing it as a file. If you need an audio file you need a screen recorder or a service that renders the speech on a server.
Why do I get different voices on different devices?
Because the voices are supplied by your operating system, not by this page. macOS, Windows, Android and iOS each ship their own set, so the list changes between devices and browsers.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Speech is synthesised locally by your device. You can disconnect from the internet after this page loads and it still works, which is a reasonable way to confirm it.
Is there a character limit?
There is no limit imposed here. Some browsers stop long utterances after a few minutes, so for very long text it is more reliable to read it in sections.
How do I add more voices?
Install them through your operating system β Windows has additional voices under language settings, macOS under Spoken Content, and Android through its text-to-speech engine. New voices appear in the list after a page refresh.
