Random Picker

Drop in a list and let the wheel choose a winner.

About the random picker

Paste a list β€” one entry per line β€” and let the wheel choose. Spin for the theatrical version, or pick instantly when you just need an answer. The "remove each winner" option takes names out of the pool as they are drawn, so you can work through a whole list in a fair random order.

The winner is chosen before the animation starts, using the browser's cryptographic random source; the spin is presentation only, and the wheel always comes to rest on the name that was actually drawn.

What it's useful for

  • Classroom β€” cold-calling students without unconscious favouritism.
  • Standups and rotas β€” deciding who presents, or the order people speak in.
  • Giveaways β€” drawing a winner from a list of entrants, visibly and without a spreadsheet.
  • Teams and pairings β€” shuffle the list and split it, or draw pairs by removing each name as it comes out.
  • Deciding anything β€” lunch, chores, who goes first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pick a random name from a list?

Paste your names into the box, one per line, then press Spin the wheel β€” or Pick instantly if you would rather skip the animation.

Can I remove a winner so they aren't picked twice?

Yes. Turn on "Remove each winner from the list after they're drawn" and each name is taken out of the pool once drawn, which lets you work through the whole list in a fair random order.

Is the wheel actually random, or does it favour certain slices?

It is genuinely random. The winner is selected first from the cryptographic random source, and the wheel is then animated to land on that slice β€” so the visual has no influence on the outcome.

How many names can I add?

There is no fixed limit. Beyond about twenty the labels get small on the wheel, so for long lists the instant pick is easier to read.
