Why JPEGs come out at full quality
PDF supports JPEG natively through a filter called DCTDecode, which means a JPEG can be placed into the file byte for byte with no decoding and no re-encoding. Your photos are embedded exactly as they were, so there is no generational quality loss.
PNG and WebP are different: PDF cannot carry them directly, so they are converted to JPEG first. That is a lossy step, done at high quality. If you need a lossless PDF of a PNG screenshot, this is worth knowing about β for photographs the difference is invisible.
Getting a good result
- Order matters. Arrange the pages before creating the PDF; the arrows beside each image move it up or down.
- Photograph documents squarely. A page shot at an angle stays at an angle β crop and straighten it first.
- Shrink very large photos first. A dozen 12-megapixel images make a PDF too big to email. Resizing them to around 1600 pixels on the long edge keeps documents perfectly readable at a fraction of the size.
- Redact before converting. Once an image is in the PDF, anything visible in it stays visible β blur or black it out beforehand.
