How many words is a page?

"How many words is a page" has no single answer, because a page is a physical thing and a word count is not. But the ranges are narrow enough to be useful, provided you know what moves them.

The numbers, with the caveats

For standard A4 or US Letter with one-inch margins:

The 250 words double-spaced figure is the one worth memorising. It is the convention almost every academic and publishing guideline assumes, which is why a "ten page" essay generally means around 2,500 words.

Working the other way:

• 500 words — one page single-spaced, two double-spaced
• 1,000 words — two pages single, four double
• 2,000 words — four pages single, eight double
• 5,000 words — ten pages single, twenty double

What actually changes the count

Four things, in roughly this order of impact:

Line spacing. The largest single factor — double spacing halves the words per page, straightforwardly.

Font size and family. Not just size: at the same point size, fonts differ substantially in width. Times New Roman is narrow and fits considerably more per line than Arial or Verdana at 12pt. This is why some submission guidelines specify the font as well as the size — they are specifying the length.

Margins. Going from one inch to 1.5 inches removes roughly a fifth of the usable width.

What is on the page. Dialogue-heavy fiction has far fewer words per page than dense prose, because every new speaker starts a new line and short lines leave the rest of the line empty. A page of dialogue might be 150 words where a page of description is 350. Headings, block quotes, lists and images all reduce it too.

Which is why, if someone specifies a page count, the useful question is what spacing, font and margins they expect — and if they specify a word count instead, they have saved everyone the argument.

Words per minute when speaking

Different question, similar usefulness.

• Conversational speech — 140 to 160 words per minute.
• Presentations and speeches — 120 to 140. Deliberately slower, because an audience needs processing time and pauses.
• Audiobook narration — 150 to 160.
• Auctioneers and sports commentary — 250 and up.

For planning: a five-minute talk is roughly 650 words, ten minutes about 1,300, and a twenty-minute conference slot around 2,600. Almost everyone overruns, because nerves speed you up and questions eat the end. Aim to fill 80% of the slot.

The text to speech tool will read a draft aloud, which is a surprisingly effective way to hear where the sentences are too long — and the countdown timer or Pomodoro timer will keep a rehearsal honest.

Reading time is the better measure online

Web pages have no pages, so word count is the wrong unit. Reading time is the one readers actually respond to.

Adult silent reading runs about 200 to 250 words per minute for general prose, dropping to 100 to 150 for technical material that requires thinking. Most "X min read" labels assume around 200 to 250.

Roughly: 500 words is a two-minute read, 1,000 is four to five minutes, and 2,000 is eight to ten. The guides on this site show an estimate for exactly this reason — it sets expectations before someone commits.

Speed-reading claims of 1,000 words per minute do not survive comprehension testing. What improves with practice is skimming, which is a different and genuinely useful skill: reading the structure rather than every word.

When characters matter more than words

Plenty of limits are counted in characters, not words, and the difference catches people out.

English averages a little under five characters per word including the space, so 160 characters is about 25 to 30 words.

Two traps. An SMS containing any non-GSM character — an emoji, a curly quote, an accented letter — switches the whole message to a different encoding and the limit drops from 160 to 70. And several platforms count emoji as two characters, since many occupy two UTF-16 code units. The word counter reports characters with and without spaces so you can check against the right limit.

Hitting a word count honestly

If you are short, the useful move is to add substance rather than filler: a concrete example, a counter-argument, an implication. Padding is obvious to anyone who reads for a living, and markers in particular read hundreds of these.

If you are long, cut adverbs, cut throat-clearing openers — "It is important to note that" is five words that say nothing — and cut the paragraph restating what you just said. Most first drafts lose 10% with no loss of meaning.

Check what actually counts before you optimise: many guidelines exclude the title page, references, footnotes, appendices and figure captions, and word counters differ on hyphenated words and numbers. If a submission has a hard limit, confirm the rules rather than assuming.
