The test
Thirty targets appear one at a time at random positions; hit each as fast as you can. The score is your average time from appearance to hit, with accuracy counting every stray click against you. Three target sizes separate raw speed (large) from precision (small), and your best average stays on this device.
Reading your score, and improving it
600-800 ms per standard target is typical for a general population, 400-500 is sharp, and a sustained sub-350 average is FPS-veteran territory. The score bundles three things: reaction time (~250 ms floor for most people โ the reaction test measures yours), mouse travel, and the final precision adjustment.
This is Fitts's law made playable: time to acquire a target scales with distance over size, which is why far-and-small costs so much more than near-and-big. Gains come from consistency โ same mouse, same sensitivity, short daily runs โ and from smoothness rather than raw twitch; pros overwhelmingly use lower sensitivities than beginners expect, trading arm movement for precision. The CPS test measures the other half of the clicking equation, and the mouse tester rules out the hardware.
