The test

A set of tiles lights for about a second; click them from memory. Each level adds a target and the grid grows every third level. Three wrong clicks in a round costs a life and re-deals the level; three lives gone ends the run. Best level stays on this device.

Patterns beat positions

Most people top out between levels 8 and 11 โ€” ten to thirteen positions held at once, which is well beyond the 4-or-so isolated items visual working memory manages, and the gap is exactly the trick: nobody good at this remembers positions. They see a constellation, a letter, a dog โ€” one pattern instead of a dozen coordinates. Gestalt grouping does the heavy lifting free of charge.

This is the simultaneous cousin of the sequential test โ€” some people are dramatically better at one than the other, which is itself interesting. The digit span completes the set. As with all brain-toy scores, tiredness moves them more than talent: compare same-time-of-day runs only.
