How fixed deposit interest is calculated
A fixed deposit (also called a term deposit, CD or fixed-rate bond) locks money away at a fixed rate. Its maturity value is A = P ร (1 + r/n)^(n ร t), where P is the deposit, r the annual rate, n the number of compounding periods a year and t the years. Most Indian banks compound FDs quarterly, so 1,00,000 at 7.1% for three years matures at about 1,23,508 โ and the effective annual yield is 7.29%, a little above the headline rate because interest earns interest. Deposits under six months often pay simple interest instead. The effective yield is the fair way to compare offers that compound at different frequencies. What the calculator does not deduct: tax on interest (in India, TDS above the threshold), premature-withdrawal penalties, and inflation, which can turn a positive nominal return into a negative real one. General information, not financial advice. The RD calculator handles monthly deposits, the compound interest calculator adds regular contributions, the inflation calculator shows real value, and How to set a savings goal: the arithmetic, the interest, and the habits that make it stick helps plan the target.
