Reading the result honestly
Compound interest pays interest on interest, so growth accelerates: the early years look disappointing and the late years look implausible, and both are correct. The rule of 72 gives the feel โ money doubles roughly every 72 รท rate years, so ~14 years at 5%. Time in the market is the dominant variable, which is the entire case for starting early with small amounts over starting late with large ones.
What the model deliberately ignores: tax, fees, inflation, and the fact that real returns vary year to year rather than arriving smoothly. A "5% average" with real-world volatility ends somewhere different from a smooth 5% โ so treat the output as arithmetic, not a forecast, and nothing here is financial advice. How is compound interest different from simple interest?
Simple interest pays only on the original amount; compound interest pays on the balance including past interest, so growth accelerates over time.
What is the rule of 72?
Divide 72 by the annual rate for the approximate doubling time: at 6%, about 12 years. It is a mental shortcut, accurate enough for planning.
Does compounding frequency matter much?
Less than people expect: ยฃ10,000 at 5% for a year is ยฃ10,500 compounded annually and about ยฃ10,512 compounded daily. Rate and time dominate.
Are the results a prediction?
No โ they assume a constant rate and ignore tax, fees and inflation. Real investment returns vary; this is arithmetic for comparing scenarios, not advice.
