About the tip calculator
Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, and set how many people are splitting it. You get the tip, the total and the amount per person, updating as you type. The round-up option raises the total to the next whole number and folds the difference into the tip, which is handy when you would rather hand over a clean figure.
How much to tip, by country
Tipping norms vary enormously, and applying the wrong one is a reliable way to over- or under-pay:
- United States β 15β20% is standard in restaurants, and staff wages often assume it.
- Canada β 15β20%, similar to the US.
- United Kingdom β 10β12.5%, and often already added as a "service charge". Check the bill before adding more.
- Most of Europe β service is usually included; rounding up or leaving 5β10% is generous rather than expected.
- Japan and South Korea β tipping is not customary and can cause confusion or offence.
- Australia and New Zealand β not expected; 10% for notably good service.
Where a service charge already appears on the bill, tipping on top of it is optional.

How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Enter the bill and set the tip to 20%, or tap the 20% preset. As a mental shortcut, take 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then double it.
How do I split a bill between friends?
Set "People" to the number splitting it. The "Each person" figure is the total including tip divided by that number.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Either is accepted in the US, though tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more common convention. The difference is small β on a $50 bill it is well under a dollar.
What does the round-up option do?
It raises the total to the next whole number and adds the difference to the tip, so you pay a clean amount. The tip percentage shown updates to reflect what you actually gave.
