Inflation Calculator

What an amount is worth between two years at a rate you set โ€” purchasing power lost.

About this tool

Enter an amount, two years and an average annual inflation rate (or pick a rounded 2000โ€“2025 average for a large economy). The tool shows the equivalent amount in each direction, cumulative inflation over the period and the purchasing power lost by cash left idle.

What this can and cannot tell you

Inflation compounds like interest, so the sum is simple: an amount times (1 + rate) to the power of the years. What is hard is the rate, because the honest one is the actual consumer price index for your country over the specific months in question โ€” and that series lives with statistics offices (the US BLS, UK ONS, Eurostat, the ABS and their peers), whose own calculators are exact for historical questions and should be your source for them. This tool is for what those cannot do: a future projection at an assumed rate, a country without a public calculator, or a fast sanity check with a rounded average. The presets are approximate long-run averages, not the rate for any particular year, and a period that includes 2021โ€“2023 will differ a lot from the average. Practical use: a pay offer that is below cumulative inflation since your last rise is a real-terms cut; a savings rate below inflation loses purchasing power however the balance looks. Not financial advice. The compound interest calculator is the same maths applied to savings, the salary converter and the percentage calculator handle the pay-rise arithmetic, and the retirement calculator uses an inflation input to show a pot in today's money.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it not have exact historical rates?

Because exact answers need the full monthly CPI series for each country, which statistics offices publish and maintain. Using a rounded average would present a guess as a fact.

What rate should I use for the future?

Central banks in most developed economies target about 2%; long-run averages are 2โ€“3%. Try a range.

How do I check a pay rise?

Enter your last salary, the year of your last rise and this year: the 'is worth' figure is what you would need now just to stand still.
