RD Calculator

Recurring deposit maturity from a monthly instalment, rate and tenure.

About this tool

Enter the monthly instalment, the annual rate, the tenure in months and the compounding frequency. The calculator shows the maturity value, the total you deposit, the interest earned and a bar comparing your money with the interest.

How recurring deposits grow

A recurring deposit takes the same amount every month for a fixed term at a fixed rate. Each instalment earns interest only from the month it is paid in, so the first instalment earns for the full term and the last for a single month. The maturity value is the sum of every instalment compounded for the time it was invested; Indian banks and the post office compound RDs quarterly, which this calculator uses by default. As an example, 5,000 a month for 36 months at 6.8% matures at about 2,00,059 on 1,80,000 deposited. That is noticeably less interest than a lump-sum fixed deposit of 1,80,000 on day one would earn, because the average amount invested is roughly half. RDs suit regular savers who want a guaranteed result; banks round and credit interest slightly differently, so expect small differences from their own calculators. Tax on interest is not deducted. General information, not financial advice. The FD calculator handles lump sums, the SIP calculator market-linked monthly investing, the savings goal calculator works back from a target, and How to set a savings goal: the arithmetic, the interest, and the habits that make it stick explains the planning.

Frequently asked questions

How is RD maturity calculated?

Each monthly instalment is compounded for the months it stays invested, and the results are added. Quarterly compounding is standard for Indian bank RDs.

RD or FD โ€” which earns more?

For the same total, an FD earns more because all the money is invested from day one. An RD suits saving a fixed amount from income each month.

What happens if I miss an instalment?

Most banks charge a small penalty and some close the account after several missed instalments. Check your bank's terms.
