About this tool

You see the total invested, estimated gains, maturity value, the value of the same total invested as a lump sum today, a bar showing your money versus growth, and a year-by-year table.
How SIP returns are calculated
A systematic investment plan puts a fixed amount into a mutual fund or index fund every month. The calculator compounds monthly at the annual rate รท 12 with each instalment invested at the start of the month โ the annuity-due convention fund houses' own calculators use โ so 5,000 a month for 10 years at 12% grows to about 11.6 lakh (1.16 million) from 6 lakh invested. The step-up raises the instalment once a year, matching how most people increase investing with pay rises; a 10% step-up has a striking effect over long periods. The lump-sum figure shows the same total invested on day one, which is always higher in a rising market but is rarely an option in practice โ regular investing also averages the purchase price across market ups and downs. Honest notes: returns are not guaranteed and arrive unevenly; equity funds have fallen 30% or more in bad years, so test 8% as well as 12%; expense ratios, exit loads and tax on gains are not deducted. General information, not investment advice. The CAGR calculator measures a fund's past growth, the retirement calculator adds inflation and withdrawals, the compound interest calculator handles a single deposit, and the savings goal calculator works backwards from a target.
Frequently asked questions
How is SIP maturity value calculated?
FV = P ร ((1 + i)^n โ 1) รท i ร (1 + i), where P is the monthly amount, i the monthly rate (annual รท 12) and n the number of months. With a step-up the calculator compounds month by month instead.
What return should I assume?
Long-run Indian equity index returns have been around 11โ13% a year and global equities around 7โ10% before fees, but past returns do not guarantee future ones. Try a cautious figure.
What is a step-up SIP?
One where the monthly instalment increases by a fixed percentage each year, for example 10%, usually in line with salary growth.
