How to type faster

Typing speed is one of the few office skills where deliberate practice pays off in weeks rather than years โ and where most advice is folklore. Here is what the evidence and the touch-typing tradition actually support.
Know your baseline
Take a one-minute test before changing anything โ the typing speed test scores words per minute and accuracy together, which matters because the two trade off. For reference: casual typists average 35โ40 WPM, office workers 40โ50, professional typists 65โ80, and competitive typists live above 120. A "word" is standardised at five characters, so scores are comparable across tests and texts.
Retest weekly, same time of day. Speed fluctuates with tiredness โ comparing a Monday morning to a Friday night tells you about your week, not your progress.
Why hunt-and-peck has a ceiling
Looking at the keyboard caps you near 30 WPM no matter how long you practise, because the eyes become the bottleneck: they ping between screen and keys, and every glance costs the reading flow that fast typing rides on. Touch typing โ each finger owning its keys, eyes never leaving the screen โ removes that bottleneck entirely, which is why it has no comparable ceiling.
The standard is home row: fingers rest on ASDF and JKL;, the bumps on F and J anchoring the hands blind. Every key belongs to one finger, and the discipline of using the correct finger โ even when it feels slower โ is the entire method. Sight-typists who "know roughly where keys are" plateau; touch typists do not.
Accuracy first is not a platitude
The counterintuitive rule every typing teacher repeats because it is measurably true: typing 10 WPM slower at 99% accuracy beats typing faster at 95%. Errors cost more than their correction time โ each one breaks rhythm, forces a backspace pause, and worst of all rehearses the wrong finger movement. Practising fast and sloppy trains sloppiness with excellent muscle memory.
The test reflects this honestly: only correctly typed characters count toward speed. If your accuracy sits below 96%, slow down until it doesn't; speed returns within days and then keeps climbing.
A four-week plan
- Week 1 โ remap. Learn home row and correct fingering. Expect to be slower than your old style; this is the investment week. Ten to fifteen minutes daily beats an hour on Saturday, every time.
- Week 2 โ stop looking. Cover your hands with a tea towel if needed. Speed recovers to your old baseline surprisingly fast.
- Week 3 โ common words. The top few hundred English words are most of what you ever type; drilling them turns whole words into single finger-gestures. The test draws from exactly this vocabulary.
- Week 4 โ real work. Write emails and documents with the new fingering, no regressions allowed. From here, ordinary work is the practice.
Most people land 10โ20 WPM above their old baseline within the month, with the curve still rising.
Breaking plateaus
Every typist stalls somewhere. The escapes that work: type slightly above comfortable speed on easy text (errors will spike, then fall โ this stretches the ceiling), drill your personal problem letters (the test's word-by-word tally shows where errors cluster), and practise numbers and punctuation, which most people never train and which drag real-world speed far below test speed.

Hands, keyboards and comfort
Speed lives downstream of comfort. Wrists floating or on a rest โ not bent upward; elbows at roughly ninety degrees; screen high enough that you are not craning. Discomfort that persists is a signal to fix the setup, not to push through: RSI ends typing careers, and prevention is embarrassingly cheap.
Keyboards matter less than forums insist, but travel and feedback are real: most people type fastest on boards with clear actuation feedback, whether mechanical or good laptop scissor switches. What matters far more is that it is the same keyboard โ muscle memory is device-specific, and alternating between a desktop board and a cramped laptop costs speed on both.
