What is a good typing speed?

The most quoted figure is that the average person types at about 40 words per minute. It's roughly right, and almost useless on its own โ€” because the spread around it is enormous, and because a WPM number without an accuracy number is only half a measurement. Here is what the figures actually look like, and how to read your own. The averages, honestly stated

Measured across large pools of online test takers, the averages cluster tightly:

  • Around 40 WPM for the general adult population.
  • 50โ€“60 WPM for people who type all day for work โ€” office workers, students, anyone whose job runs through a keyboard.
  • 70โ€“90 WPM for people who have deliberately practised โ€” touch typists using all ten fingers without looking.
  • 100+ WPM is competitive territory; professional transcriptionists work around 80โ€“100, and competitive typists exceed 150.

The world record, set on modern layouts with modern tests, sits above 300 WPM in short bursts โ€” but a burst is not a pace. Even elite typists lose 20โ€“30% of their sprint speed over a full paragraph, which is why serious tests run at least a minute.

How WPM is actually calculated

A โ€œwordโ€ in WPM is not a word โ€” it is five characters, including spaces. The convention exists because real words vary so much (โ€œaโ€ versus โ€œextraordinarilyโ€) that counting them would make scores depend on the text. So the arithmetic is:

WPM = (correct characters รท 5) รท minutes elapsed.

Two details matter. First, only correct characters should count โ€” a test that credits mistyped text inflates the score. Second, most tests (ours included) count the space after a word as one of its characters, which is why the arithmetic works out the same across languages with different word lengths. Speed by age and experience

Age matters less than you'd expect, and exposure matters more:

  • Children learning to type manage 15โ€“25 WPM through primary school.
  • Teenagers typically reach 40โ€“55 WPM โ€” the generation gap is real, but it favours whoever spent more hours at a physical keyboard, not whoever is younger. Heavy phone users can be startlingly slow on a full keyboard.
  • Adults 20โ€“40 hold the plateau their habits earn โ€” 40 WPM hunting and pecking, 60โ€“80 touch typing.
  • Older adults lose a little raw finger speed, but practised typists keep most of their pace for decades; technique outlasts twitch.

The single biggest divider in every dataset is not age but method: people who look at the keyboard average roughly half the speed of people who don't.

So what counts as good?

Honest benchmarks: 40 WPM is average, 60 is good, 80 is fast, 100 is exceptional. For almost any job that asks about typing, 60โ€“70 WPM with high accuracy clears the bar โ€” data-entry and transcription roles ask for more, usually 70โ€“90. Past about 80, extra speed stops changing your life: thinking, not typing, becomes the bottleneck in nearly all real writing.

Why accuracy beats raw speed

Every error costs more than the moment it takes to make: you notice, stop, reach for backspace, retype, and find your place again. That cycle burns two to five seconds โ€” the same time in which a 60 WPM typist produces a whole word. The arithmetic is brutal: a typist doing 70 WPM at 92% accuracy finishes real work slower than one doing 60 WPM at 99%, because the first one is constantly reversing.

Moving your number up

  • Learn the home row properly. Fingers on ASDF and JKL;, every key owned by one finger. The two weeks of feeling slower is the whole price.
  • Stop looking down. Cover your hands if you must. Eyes on the screen is the single habit that separates the 40s from the 70s.
  • Practise little and often. Ten minutes daily beats an hour on Sunday โ€” typing is motor learning, and motor learning consolidates between sessions, which is the same logic that makes short focused sessions work for studying.
  • Type real text. Random-word drills build key skills, but prose teaches the rhythms your fingers will actually use.

Then measure once a day, not once an hour. The test charts your last thirty results, and the line matters more than any single run โ€” plateaus are normal, and the trend is what tells the truth.
