SMART Goal Generator
Turn a rough goal into a SMART goal statement with milestones and checks.
About this tool
Write your goal in a few words, then answer five prompts: what exactly you will achieve, how you will measure it, why it is achievable, why it matters and the deadline. Add milestones, one per line. The tool writes a one-sentence goal statement, lists each SMART element and ticks the letters that pass simple checks, telling you what is missing.
How to write a SMART goal
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound, a framework from 1980s management writing that is now standard for work objectives, coaching and personal plans. A vague goal such as "get fitter" becomes: "By the deadline, I will run a 10K race without stopping, measured by finishing the Leeds 10K in under 60 minutes." Specific says exactly what will happen. Measurable needs a number, so you know when you are done. Achievable notes your starting point and plan, such as already running 4K and following a 12-week plan. Relevant says why it matters to you now. Time-bound sets a date. Milestones break a longer goal into steps you can see, such as 5K by week 4 and 8K by week 8. The checks here are deliberately simple: measurable needs a digit and time-bound needs a date. Honest limits: a SMART goal is only as good as the plan and habits behind it, so review it weekly and adjust. The habit tracker records daily progress, the to-do list handles next steps and the countdown counts down to the deadline. How long does it take to build a habit? explains why consistency matters.
