RACI Matrix
Who's responsible, accountable, consulted and informed โ with checks and CSV.
About this tool
Name the project, the people across the top and the tasks down the side. Tap a cell to cycle through R, A, C, I and blank. The Check column flags any task without exactly one A or without an R, and the workload list shows how many of each letter every person holds. Export a CSV for a spreadsheet, copy a Markdown table for a wiki, or print it. It saves in your browser as you go.
How to use a RACI matrix
A RACI matrix, also called a responsibility assignment matrix, makes clear who does what on a project. Responsible people do the work. The Accountable person owns the outcome and signs it off. Consulted people give input before decisions, which is two-way. Informed people are kept up to date, which is one-way. Two rules matter most, and the Check column tests both: every task needs exactly one A, because shared accountability usually means nobody's, and someone must do the work. On small tasks the accountable person often does it themselves; mark them A and no separate R is needed. Use the workload list to spot people with too many Rs and As, and tasks with so many Cs that decisions will stall. Someone who is only ever I may not need to be on the project at all. Variants such as RASCI add S for Support, but plain RACI covers most teams. Build the matrix with the team rather than for them, so everyone agrees before work starts. The Gantt chart plans when the work happens, the kanban board tracks it day to day and the meeting agenda generator plans the kick-off. What kanban is, and why the work-in-progress limit is the whole idea explains the board.
Frequently asked questions
What does RACI stand for?
Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed: who does the work, who owns the result, who gives input and who is kept up to date.
Can a task have more than one Accountable person?
It shouldn't. Each task needs exactly one A so it is clear who makes the final call; the Check column flags tasks that break this rule.
What is the difference between Responsible and Accountable?
Responsible people do the work. The Accountable person owns the outcome and approves it, and there is only one per task.
Is my matrix saved?
Yes, in your browser only. It is never uploaded, and Start over clears it.
