The A4 / Letter problem this solves
The world prints on two slightly incompatible rectangles: A4 (210 ร 297 mm, almost everywhere) and US Letter (8.5 ร 11 in, North America). Letter is a little wider and shorter, so a Letter PDF printed on A4 either clips the sides or prints with lopsided margins โ and vice versa. Printer dialogs half-fix this with โshrink to fitโ, differently on every machine; converting the file itself fixes it once, for every printer and recipient after. The same trick rescues slides being printed as A4 handouts and PDFs authored at odd custom sizes. Fit mode never crops โ it letterboxes with even margins; fill mode never letterboxes โ it crops edges, right for backgrounds and full-bleed art. Will text stay sharp after scaling?
Yes โ pages are embedded and scaled as vectors, not re-rendered as images. Text remains selectable and prints at full quality at the new size.
What's the difference between fit and fill?
Fit shows the entire page with even borders (nothing lost). Fill covers the paper edge to edge and crops whatever overflows (nothing bare). Documents want fit; full-bleed art wants fill.
Why does my Letter PDF print badly on A4?
Letter is wider and shorter than A4, so printers either clip or shrink unpredictably. Converting the file to A4 once beats fighting every printer dialog afterwards.
Does this change the file's actual page size?
Yes โ the output PDF genuinely is A4 (or your choice), which is the point: it prints predictably everywhere, no dialog fiddling required.
