How PDF cropping actually works
Unlike cropping a photo, cropping a PDF doesn't delete anything: the file format has a โcrop boxโ that tells viewers which region to display, and this tool sets it. Your text stays real, selectable text at full quality โ and the trimmed content is technically still in the file, just hidden. That's the right behaviour for margins and scan borders; it also means cropping is NOT redaction โ hiding a paragraph with a crop does not remove it, and anyone who resets the crop box sees it again. For an e-reader, shaving generous margins makes body text meaningfully larger on screen โ often the difference between readable and squinting. Rotating sideways pages first is the rotate tool; scaling pages to a different paper size is fit to page.
