Metric vs imperial: how we got two systems

Three countries have not officially adopted the metric system: Myanmar, Liberia and the United States. How the world's largest economy ended up measuring in units standardised by medieval kings โ and why that occasionally destroys spacecraft โ is a genuinely good story, and it makes the units themselves easier to remember. Where imperial units came from
Imperial units are the human body and daily life, standardised late. A foot is a foot; an inch descends from a thumb's width (and was long defined as three barleycorns laid end to end); a yard approximates a stride or an arm; a fathom is outstretched arms; an acre is roughly what one man and an ox ploughed in a day. Their charm and their curse is the same fact: they were local. A "pound" varied by city and by trade for centuries, and the eventual standardisations โ England's 1824 Weights and Measures Act defined the imperial system properly โ arrived after the US had independence, which is why US customary and British imperial disagree: the US gallon (3.785 L) is the older English wine gallon, the imperial gallon (4.546 L) an 1824 invention. Same names, different sizes, on purpose by accident.
The metre: measurement, reinvented
Revolutionary France decided in the 1790s to burn the whole pile down and derive measurement from the Earth itself: the metre was defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator through Paris, and two surveyors spent seven years measuring a meridian arc through a country in revolution to fix it. From that one length everything cascades: a litre is a cubic decimetre, a kilogram was the mass of a litre of water, and every scale step is a power of ten with a standard prefix โ no 12 inches to the foot, 3 feet to the yard, 1,760 yards to the mile to memorise, just milli, centi, kilo.
The definitions have since been upgraded under the same philosophy โ the metre is now the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second โ anchored to constants of nature rather than any object or nation.
How metric took the world
Metrication followed trade and rebuilding: the Netherlands and much of Europe in the 19th century, newly unifying nations (Germany, Italy) adopting it as a fresh start, then the great wave of the 1960sโ70s when the Commonwealth converted โ the UK partially (pints and miles survive), Australia, New Zealand and Canada near-completely, if with Fahrenheit ovens and feet-and-inches height lingering in kitchens and conversation. Science went metric everywhere, including in America: US labs, medicine and the military (klicks are kilometres) run metric daily.
Why the US never switched
Not for lack of trying. Congress legalised the metric system in 1866, the US signed the Metre Convention in 1875, and โ the fact that surprises everyone โ the inch, pound and gallon have been officially defined in metric terms since 1893: an inch is exactly 25.4 mm, and has been by definition since 1959. The 1975 Metric Conversion Act was supposed to finish the job; it made conversion voluntary, industry declined the retooling cost, the public declined new road signs, and the effort quietly died. So the US runs a metric-defined system wearing customary clothes: the units on the milk carton are legally derived from the metre and kilogram in a Paris-descended definition chain.
What mixing systems costs
The canonical bill: NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter, lost in 1999 because a contractor's software reported thruster impulse in pound-force seconds while NASA's navigation expected newton seconds. Every individual calculation was correct; the units disagreed, the trajectory drifted, and a $327 million spacecraft hit the Martian atmosphere. The same failure at human scale: the 1983 "Gimli Glider", an Air Canada 767 that ran out of fuel mid-flight because the fuel load was computed in pounds during Canada's switchover to kilograms โ the crew glided it onto a disused runway. Unit errors aren't arithmetic errors; they're agreement errors, which is why they slip past everyone checking the arithmetic.
The conversions worth memorising
- 1 inch = 2.54 cm โ exact, by law. Everything length flows from it.
- 1 kg โ 2.2 lb; 1 mile โ 1.6 km; 1 m โ 3.28 ft.
- A litre and a US quart are within 6% of each other; an imperial pint (568 ml) is 20% bigger than a US pint (473 ml) โ the beer fact hiding in the 1824 split.
- Fahrenheit โ Celsius: exact is ร9/5 + 32; the head version is double-and-add-30, good within a couple of degrees at everyday temperatures.
For everything else โ stones to kilograms, acres to hectares, mpg in both gallon flavours โ the converter exists so nobody re-derives 1824 by hand, and you can sanity-check any result with one remembered anchor pair.
