Notice Period Calculator

Your last day from the notice date and length, plus UK statutory notice.

About this tool

Enter the date notice is given and the notice length in months, weeks, calendar days or working days. The calculator shows the last day, the dates the notice runs between, and the number of calendar and working days. Add your employment start date to see the UK statutory minimum notice for your length of service.

How notice periods are counted

The usual rule in UK employment law, and a common contract convention elsewhere, is that notice starts on the day after it's given. So one month's notice handed in on 15 March runs from 16 March to 15 April, and four weeks' notice given on a Monday ends on the Monday four weeks later. Month-based notice ends on the corresponding date in the later month. If that month is shorter, as with notice given on 31 January, the period runs to the end of February. Some contracts count differently: notice might start on the same day, end on a month end or the next pay day, or be measured in working days, so the tool supports those options. In the UK, statutory minimum notice from an employer is one week once you've worked there a month, then one week for each complete year of service up to a maximum of twelve weeks. An employee must give at least one week. Contracts often require more, and the longer of the contractual and statutory periods applies to employers. Holiday can sometimes be taken or paid in lieu during notice, garden leave may apply, and pay in lieu of notice (PILON) may be possible if your contract allows it. If your last day falls on a weekend, your last working day is usually the Friday before. Honest limits: this isn't legal advice. Tenancies, consumer contracts and other countries have their own rules, and your written contract matters most. The resignation letter generator, the working days calculator and the PTO accrual calculator are related.
