The maths behind financial independence
Financial independence means your investments can pay for your life indefinitely. The FIRE number is annual spending divided by a safe withdrawal rate: at 4% that is 25 times spending, so 40,000 a year needs 1,000,000. The 4% rule comes from US research on 30-year retirements (the Trinity study and Bengen's work); for early retirees facing 40โ50 years many planners prefer 3โ3.5%, which raises the number to 29โ33 times spending. Years to FI depend mostly on your savings rate: with 85,000 invested, 24,000 added a year and a 5% real return, 1,000,000 takes about 20 years. Coast FIRE is the amount that would grow to the target by traditional retirement age with no further contributions โ about 200,000 for a 32-year-old aiming at 65 in that example โ after which you only need to cover current spending. Using a real return keeps everything in today's money. Honest notes: returns are uneven, a crash early in retirement does more damage than the average suggests, and taxes, pensions and healthcare are outside this model. General information, not financial advice. The retirement calculator models a traditional pension, the SIP calculator monthly investing, the net worth calculator tracks progress, and the inflation calculator converts to real terms.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my FIRE number?
Divide your expected annual spending by your safe withdrawal rate. At 4%, multiply spending by 25: 40,000 ร 25 = 1,000,000.
Is the 4% rule safe for early retirement?
It was tested on 30-year retirements. For 40+ years, 3โ3.5% gives a bigger margin of safety, at the cost of a larger target.
What is Coast FIRE?
Having enough invested that it will grow to your FIRE number by traditional retirement age without further contributions.
