How to watermark photos โ€” and what a watermark can and can't protect

A watermark is a claim of ownership stamped on the picture itself โ€” the one thing that survives when a photo is right-clicked, screenshotted and reposted with the caption stripped. Done well it credits you without spoiling the image; done badly it's an eyesore that a determined thief crops off in seconds. This guide covers placement, opacity and the limits, with the watermark tool for stills and the video watermark tool for footage.

What a watermark is for

Three purposes, each wanting a different mark. Attribution: your name or handle travels with the image so that people who like it can find you โ€” a small, tasteful corner mark. Deterrence: making the image not worth stealing for commercial use โ€” a larger, semi-transparent mark over the content. Proofing: showing clients previews they can't use โ€” a big diagonal "PROOF" that is meant to be ugly. Decide which you're doing before choosing where it goes.

Visible watermarks: placement and opacity

  • Corners are easy to crop. For attribution that's fine; for deterrence, place the mark over a part of the image that matters, or tile it.
  • Opacity 30โ€“50% keeps the mark legible without hiding the photo. Full-opacity marks look like defacement.
  • Size by proportion, not pixels: 10โ€“15% of the image width for a logo, so it scales with the picture.
  • Contrast: a white mark with a subtle dark edge or shadow reads on any background; the tool handles it.
  • Consistency: the same mark in the same place across a portfolio reads as a brand; scattered marks read as an afterthought.

Text or logo? A logo is more recognisable and harder to fake; text is readable at small sizes. Many photographers use both: a logo mark and a small text URL.

Invisible watermarks and metadata

Digital watermarking hides an identifier in the pixel data โ€” imperceptible changes that survive resizing and moderate compression and can be read back by software. It is how stock agencies and studios trace leaks, and it needs specialist tools. The everyday version is metadata: the copyright and creator fields in EXIF/IPTC, which the EXIF viewer shows and many platforms strip on upload (What your photos reveal about you). Set them anyway; they cost nothing and some platforms and image searches honour them.

Batch and video

A hundred product photos need the same mark in the same place: prepare the mark once as a transparent PNG (cut it out with the background remover), then apply it in a batch pass at export, after resizing โ€” a mark applied before resizing shrinks and softens with the image. Video is the same principle per frame, re-encoded with the overlay; for clips that get reposted, a semi-transparent centred mark survives cropping to vertical far better than a corner one.

The honest limits

A watermark deters casual reuse and attributes; it does not prevent theft. Generative fill and inpainting tools remove corner marks in one click, and a 30% mark over a busy area can be reconstructed with effort. Legally, copyright exists without a watermark โ€” the mark is evidence and a deterrent, not the right itself โ€” and removing one to conceal infringement is a separate offence in many jurisdictions. The strongest protection remains not publishing the full-resolution file: post 1200-px copies, keep the originals, and register work where your country offers it.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I put a watermark?

For attribution, a corner at 10โ€“15% of the width. For deterrence, over the content or tiled, at 30โ€“50% opacity, so it can't be cropped away without damage.

What opacity should a watermark be?

30โ€“50% for a mark that reads without ruining the photo. Proof marks for clients can be stronger; they are meant to spoil the preview.

Can a watermark be removed?

Corner marks, easily, with modern fill tools; central marks with effort. Watermarks deter and attribute; posting lower-resolution copies is the real protection.

Does a watermark give me copyright?

No โ€” copyright exists automatically. The mark is evidence and a deterrent, and removing it to hide infringement is itself unlawful in many places.
