About this tool

How many words are on a page?
The rule of thumb most teachers and editors use is about 500 words per page single-spaced and 250 double-spaced, for 12 pt Times New Roman on US Letter or A4 paper with 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins. So 1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced or 4 double-spaced, and a 2,500-word essay fills about 10 double-spaced pages. The calculator starts from that baseline and adjusts for what you choose. Wider fonts fit fewer words: Arial gives about 447 words per page against Times New Roman's 500, and Courier New about 350. Font size works roughly with its square, because larger letters take more space both across the line and down the page, so 11 pt fits about 19% more than 12 pt. Line spacing divides directly, so 1.5 spacing fits two-thirds as much as single. A4 holds about 4% more than US Letter with standard margins. Handwriting averages about 250 words per side of lined paper. Use it in reverse to see how much you can write for a page limit: 5 double-spaced pages is about 1,250 words. Honest limits: these are averages for continuous prose. Headings, short paragraphs, dialogue, bullet lists, block quotes, title pages and reference lists all push the page count up, so leave a margin before a deadline.
