Recipe Card Maker

Print recipes on 4×6 or 5×7 index cards, A6, A5 or a full page.

About this tool

Type the title, servings, prep and cook times, then the ingredients and method, one per line. The steps are numbered for you. Choose a card size and an accent colour, check the preview, and print or save it as a PDF. You'll get a warning if a recipe is too long for the card you picked.

Making recipe cards that last

A handwritten recipe box is a family heirloom, but faded ink and splashes take their toll. Printed cards are easier to read at the stove, simple to copy for relatives and nice to give as gifts. The classic sizes are 3 × 5, 4 × 6 and 5 × 7 inch index cards. 4 × 6 is the most common for recipe boxes, while 5 × 7 leaves room for longer methods. Outside North America, A6 (postcard size) and A5 are easy equivalents. The layout puts ingredients in a narrow column and the method beside it, so you can check quantities while you work. Times and servings sit under the title, and notes and the recipe's source, such as "Grandma Rose", go at the bottom. Write ingredients in the order they're used, put amounts first (190 g flour, not flour 190 g), include oven temperatures in both °C and °F if you share with friends abroad, and keep each step to one action. To print, choose the matching paper size in the print dialog and turn off headers and footers. On ordinary paper, print and trim along the card's edge, or use 4 × 6 photo paper. Honest limits: photos aren't supported, and very long recipes won't fit a small card, so switch to 5 × 7, A5 or a full page. The recipe scaler, the cooking converter and the meal planner are related.
