About this tool

Type a time in almost any format, such as 2:30 pm, 9am, 14:30, 0730 or 730, or press Now. The converter shows the 24-hour military time, the 12-hour time with AM or PM, and how it is said aloud. A chart below lists every hour in both formats.

How military time works

Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits, with no colon and no AM or PM. The day starts at 0000, midnight, and runs to 2359. Morning times look familiar with a leading zero, so 7:30 AM is 0730. For afternoon and evening times, add 12 to the hour: 2:30 PM is 1430 and 9 PM is 2100. To go back, subtract 12 from any hour of 13 or more. The two that catch people out are 12 AM, which is 0000, and 12 PM, which is 1200. Aloud, 1430 is said "fourteen thirty hours", 0730 is "zero seven thirty hours" and 1500 is "fifteen hundred hours"; many people say "oh" instead of "zero". You may also see 2400 for the very end of a day, so a shift might run from 1600 to 2400. Outside the military, the 24-hour clock is standard for timetables, hospitals and most of the world's clocks. Honest limits: this converts clock times only and doesn't adjust for time zones; the military uses Zulu time (UTC) for coordination. The time zone converter handles zones and the world clock shows several cities at once.
