How international clothing sizes compare
Women's dress sizes follow a simple pattern in most charts. UK and Australian sizes are the US size plus 4, EU (German) sizes are the US size plus 32, French and Spanish are plus 34 and Italian are plus 36. So a US 8 is a UK 12, EU 40, French 42 and Italian 44. Men's jackets and suits are sized by chest measurement in inches in the US and UK; a 40 fits a chest of about 102 cm and is a 50 in European sizing, which adds 10. Shirts are sized by collar: 15ยฝ inches is 39 cm. Trousers and jeans use waist inches, and European trouser sizes are roughly the waist plus 16, so W32 is a 48. Letter sizes vary most of all, since one brand's medium is another's large. Honest limits: these are typical equivalents, not legal standards. Brands, cuts and countries differ, and US sizes have drifted smaller over the decades through vanity sizing.
