How GPA is actually calculated

A GPA is just an average with one twist: classes count in proportion to their credit hours. Once you see the twist, every GPA question โ why the B in a 4-credit class hurt more than the A in a 1-credit seminar helped, why senior-year grades barely move the number โ answers itself. The 4.0 scale
Letter grades map to grade points. The most common US mapping:
- A = 4.0, Aโ = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, Bโ = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, Cโ = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, Dโ = 0.7
- F = 0.0
Two footnotes worth knowing: some schools award 4.3 for an A+ while others cap at 4.0, and some skip plus/minus entirely โ which is why the same transcript can produce slightly different GPAs at different institutions. Your school's official mapping wins; everything below works with any mapping.
The actual calculation
GPA = total grade points รท total credit hours, where each class contributes its grade points ร its credit hours. A semester:
- Calculus, 4 credits, B (3.0) โ 12.0 quality points
- Chemistry, 3 credits, A (4.0) โ 12.0
- English, 3 credits, B+ (3.3) โ 9.9
- PE, 1 credit, A (4.0) โ 4.0
Total: 37.9 quality points over 11 credits โ GPA 3.45. Note what the weighting did: the 4-credit B dragged harder than the 1-credit A lifted. An unweighted average of the four grades would say 3.58 โ the credit weighting is the difference, and it's why the calculator asks for credits at all.
Weighted vs unweighted
High schools often add difficulty bonuses: an unweighted GPA caps at 4.0, while a weighted GPA gives honors classes +0.5 and AP/IB classes +1.0 โ so an A in AP Biology counts 5.0 and weighted GPAs run above 4.0. That's how a "4.6 GPA" exists.
Which one matters? Both, differently. Class rank usually runs on weighted (it rewards taking hard classes); colleges routinely recalculate applicants' GPAs onto their own scale anyway, looking at unweighted-plus-course-rigor rather than trusting any school's weighting. The practical advice hiding in that: an A in a regular class beats a C in an AP class on nearly every scale, but a B in AP versus an A in regular is roughly a wash on weighted scales โ so take the harder class if you can hold a B.
Semester vs cumulative
Your cumulative GPA is the same formula run over every credit you've ever taken โ not an average of semester GPAs (semesters with more credits count more). This has one big consequence: the denominator only grows. In your first semester, every grade moves the number dramatically; by senior year, 100 banked credits mean a great semester nudges a 3.0 to about 3.1. GPAs are heavy objects โ early grades are the cheapest ones you'll ever influence, and repairs late in the transcript work in tenths.
What actually moves your GPA
- High-credit classes. A 5-credit grade is worth five 1-credit grades. Triage accordingly in a hard week.
- Retakes, where policy allows. Many schools replace (or average) a retaken grade โ replacing an F with a B is the single largest GPA move available.
- Early semesters. Small denominator, big swings โ in both directions.
- The math itself, before it's final. Mid-semester, the grade calculator tells you what you need on the final; after grades post, the GPA calculator handles the credit weighting. Between them, no GPA outcome should ever be a surprise.
