Building a puzzle
One word per line, pick a grid size, generate. Words hide in up to eight directions, sharing letters where they cross, and everything else fills with random letters. Show answers highlights the hidden words for an answer key โ print once with, once without โ and anything that genuinely cannot fit is reported rather than silently dropped.
Tuning the difficulty
The dials are direction and density. A 10ร10 with diagonals and backwards words off suits early readers; 15ร15 with everything on is the classic newspaper level; a 20ร20 carrying twenty-plus words keeps adults quiet on long journeys. Longer words are paradoxically easier to find (more anchor letters), so a hard puzzle uses many short words, not few long ones.
Teachers use custom lists for spelling and vocabulary weeks โ the puzzle drills letter-order attention in a way flashcards don't. Words are uppercased and stripped of spaces and hyphens per convention. Why won't one of my words fit?
It is longer than the grid or the layout got crowded โ the tool tells you rather than dropping it silently. Use a bigger grid or trim the list.
How many words can I hide?
Up to 24, each 3+ letters and no longer than the grid side. A 15ร15 comfortably takes 10-14 words.
Can I make an easy puzzle for young children?
Yes โ turn off diagonals and backwards words and use a 10ร10. Left-to-right and top-to-bottom only is the standard early-reader format.
