Volume Booster
Make quiet audio louder โ with a real clipping warning before damage.
About this booster
Drop a quiet file and the tool measures its actual peak level, then tells you live โ as you drag the slider โ whether the boost stays clean or will clip, and what the loudest clean setting is. No guessing, no crunchy surprises in the download.
Clipping, and why the warning matters
Digital audio has a hard ceiling: samples range from โ1 to +1 and nothing exists beyond. Boost a waveform past it and the peaks don't get louder โ they get FLATTENED, and flat-topped waves are the buzzy distortion called clipping, which no later processing can repair (the information is gone). That's why this tool measures before boosting: a recording peaking at 40% can take 2.5ร cleanly; one peaking at 90% has almost no headroom, and the readout says so before you commit. The suggested maximum is exactly the boost that puts your loudest moment at the ceiling โ which is also what the normalizer applies automatically, making it the better one-click when "as loud as cleanly possible" is the goal. Honest limitation: boosting raises everything, hiss included โ a quiet recording is boosted noise-and-all, and true noise reduction is spectral surgery beyond a gain slider. EQ can tame the worst frequencies after.
Frequently asked questions
What is clipping and why care?
Digital audio's ceiling: boosted peaks that exceed maximum get flattened into buzzy, unfixable distortion. The live warning tells you before it happens โ after, no tool can undo it.
What's the loudest safe boost?
The tool computes it from your file: if peaks sit at 50%, 2ร (200%) is the clean maximum. The readout names the number so you don't hunt for it.
Why does my boosted recording sound hissy?
Gain raises everything โ signal and background noise alike. That's physics, not a bug; recordings made closer to the mic need less boost and stay cleaner.
Booster or normalizer โ which one?
Same underlying operation. The normalizer picks the perfect gain automatically (peak to maximum); the booster is manual, for when you want a specific level or a deliberate partial boost.
