What lives in each band
EQ makes sense the moment the bands get names. 60 Hz is rumble and boom — traffic, desk thumps, the weight of a kick drum. 170 Hz is body and, in excess, mud (the most common cut in voice work). 400 Hz is the boxy zone where small-room recordings live unpleasantly. 1 kHz is presence. 3 kHz is INTELLIGIBILITY — consonants concentrate here, which is why the voice preset lifts it and why old telephones, which kept little else, remained understandable. 10 kHz is air, sparkle and hiss, all three at once. The craft rules worth stealing from every mixing guide: prefer CUTTING the problem over boosting everything else (a 3 dB cut at 400 Hz often beats a 6 dB boost elsewhere), and treat ±6 dB as generous — beyond it, filters audibly ring. Heavy bass boosts can push peaks past the ceiling, so run the normalizer after; and if what you're fighting is a specific hum, the spectrum analyzer will name its frequency first so you cut the right band.

Which preset fixes muffled voice recordings?
Voice clarity — it cuts the low mud (60–170 Hz) and lifts 1–3 kHz where consonants live. It's the single most useful EQ move for phone and laptop recordings.
Why does everyone say cut, don't boost?
Cuts remove a problem; boosts raise everything around it, noise included, and push peaks toward clipping. A small cut in the offending band usually sounds cleaner than boosts everywhere else.
Can EQ remove background hiss?
It can TAME it — hiss lives around 10 kHz, and a highshelf cut helps at the cost of some sparkle. Full noise removal is spectral processing beyond an EQ, and this page won't pretend otherwise.
Why WAV output instead of MP3?
Browsers decode MP3 but don't encode it. WAV keeps the EQ'd result lossless; compress it downstream if you need to.
