Spectrum Analyzer

Live frequency analysis of your mic or an audio file, with peak readout.

About this analyzer

A real-time FFT of your microphone or an audio file while it plays โ€” frequency bars from bass to treble on a logarithmic axis, with a live readout naming the loudest frequency. Microphone audio is analysed and discarded; nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.

Reading the picture, catching the culprits

The analyzer splits incoming sound into its component frequencies many times a second โ€” bass left, treble right, bar height = energy. First five minutes of fun: whistle (one clean spike that slides with your pitch), sing a vowel (a spike forest โ€” your fundamental plus harmonics), say "sss" (a wash above 5 kHz), play a song (the kick drum thumping the left edge). Then the practical work it's quietly excellent at: HUM HUNTING โ€” a spike parked at exactly 50 or 60 Hz is mains interference (which one tells you your continent's grid), and its harmonic at 100 or 120 Hz is the classic ground-loop signature; find it here, then cut that band with the EQ. Room assessment: run it in "silence" and see what your background noise actually contains before a recording session. Speaker checks: sweep the tone generator through a speaker and watch for frequencies that vanish. The peak readout even works as a rough tuner, though the real one is next door. The time-domain picture of sound is the waveform tool's job.

Frequently asked questions

Is my microphone audio recorded?

No โ€” it's analysed frame by frame for the display and immediately discarded. Nothing is stored, and nothing leaves your device; the page works offline.

What does a spike at 50 or 60 Hz mean?

Mains electrical hum leaking into your audio chain โ€” 50 Hz in Europe/Asia, 60 in the Americas. A companion spike at double the frequency is the classic ground-loop signature. Cut it with the EQ.

Why is the frequency axis logarithmic?

Because hearing is โ€” each octave doubles frequency, and log spacing gives every octave equal width. Linear spacing would cram all the musical action into the leftmost sliver.

Can I analyse a file instead of the mic?

Yes โ€” drop any audio file and it plays while the analyzer runs, no microphone permission needed.
