Travel Budget Calculator

Plan trip costs per person and per day, with a contingency.

About this tool

Enter the trip length, number of travellers and rooms, and your estimated costs. The tool adds a contingency buffer and shows the total, per-person and per-day cost, and a breakdown of where the money goes.

Building a realistic trip budget

A good travel budget separates fixed costs from daily ones. Fixed costs include flights or train fares (per person), insurance, visas and any pre-booked tours. Accommodation is per room per night, and a 7-day trip usually means 6 nights. Daily costs include food and drink per person, plus local transport such as metro passes, taxis or car hire and fuel for the group. Activities and entry fees go per person for the whole trip. Add a contingency of 10โ€“15% for price rises, extra meals, tips and the unexpected. The example, two people for a week with ยฃ350 flights each, a ยฃ120 room and ยฃ40 a day each for food, comes to about ยฃ2,600, or roughly ยฃ1,300 each and ยฃ370 a day. The breakdown chart shows which categories dominate, usually flights and accommodation, so you can see where savings matter most. Honest limits: the calculator doesn't look up prices or convert currencies, so enter everything in one currency. Daily costs vary hugely by destination and season, so check recent local prices. Not financial advice. The budget planner and the fuel cost calculator are related.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget per day for travel?

It depends heavily on the destination. Add accommodation per night to food, local transport and activities per day, then add 10 to 15% for extras.

How many nights is a 7-day trip?

Usually 6 nights, if you arrive on day 1 and leave on day 7.

What is a contingency buffer?

Extra money, typically 10 to 15% of the budget, set aside for unexpected costs.

Does this convert currencies?

No. Enter all amounts in one currency; it never fetches exchange rates.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent.
