About this tool
Enter a torque value and its unit to see it in every other unit; tap a result to copy it. Enter a wrench length to see how hard you need to push at the end of the handle.
Torque units explained
Torque is a twisting force: force multiplied by the distance from the pivot. The SI unit is the newton-metre; the US uses pound-feet (lb-ft, also written ft-lb) for car wheels and engines and pound-inches for smaller fasteners, while some tools and servo motors use kgf·cm or oz-in. 1 lb-ft is 1.356 N·m and 1 N·m is 0.738 lb-ft, so 100 N·m is 73.76 lb-ft, 885 lb-in or 10.2 kgf·m, and a 25 lb-ft spec is 33.9 N·m. Because torque is force × distance, a longer wrench needs less push: 100 N·m on a 30 cm wrench takes about 333 N at the end of the handle, the weight of roughly 34 kg. Honest limits: always follow the fastener or vehicle manufacturer's torque spec and units; whether threads are clean, dry or lubricated changes the correct value, and torque wrenches need periodic calibration. The horsepower calculator and the pressure converter are related.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert N·m to lb-ft?
Multiply by 0.7376. 100 N·m is 73.76 lb-ft.
How do I convert lb-ft to N·m?
Multiply by 1.3558. 25 lb-ft is 33.9 N·m.
Is ft-lb the same as lb-ft?
For torque, yes; they are the same quantity. ft-lb is also used as a unit of energy.
How many lb-in are in a lb-ft?
12. Multiply lb-ft by 12 to get lb-in.
