Test Grade Calculator
Test score percentage and letter grade, plus a printable grading chart.
About this tool
Enter the total number of questions or points and the number wrong (or right), and choose a grading scale. The calculator shows the percentage and letter grade and what each question is worth. Below, a chart lists every possible number wrong with its percentage and grade, which you can print to mark a stack of papers quickly.
How to calculate a test grade
A test percentage is the number of correct answers divided by the total, multiplied by 100. On a 40-question test with 6 wrong, that's 34 รท 40 ร 100 = 85%, a B on the common 10-point scale where 90% and above is an A, 80% a B, 70% a C, 60% a D and below that an F. Points-based tests work the same way: divide points earned by points possible. Each question on a 40-question test is worth 2.5%, so the chart steps down in 2.5% increments, which is exactly what teachers' "easy grader" charts show. Grading scales vary: many US schools add plus and minus grades, some use a 7-point scale, and UK universities use degree classes, with 70% or more for a first and 40% the usual pass mark. Weighted grades, curves and partial credit change the final result, so this tool covers a single test's raw score. For course grades that combine several assignments with different weights, use a weighted average. Honest limits: grade boundaries are set by your school, course or exam board, so use the scale that applies to you. The grade calculator shows what you need on a final exam, the GPA calculator averages courses and the rubric maker builds marking rubrics.
