About this tool

Type a word to see up to 30 synonyms with the ten closest highlighted; click any synonym to explore further, and copy the list. Inflected forms like running or happier are mapped to their base word.

Choosing the right synonym

A thesaurus gives you options, but the right word depends on meaning, tone and context. 'Big' can become large, great, considerable or grand, and each says something slightly different. This finder ranks synonyms by how much their own synonym lists overlap with your word's, so words used in the same sense float to the top: angry brings up mad, furious and irritated before words linked to other senses. When a word has several meanings ('fast' as quick or as firmly fixed), synonyms for all of them appear together, so read your sentence back with the new word in place. Prefer the plainer word when two fit equally well, keep the register consistent (do not drop a formal word into a casual sentence), and check that the replacement takes the same grammar ('rely on' versus 'trust'). The lists come from Moby Thesaurus II by Grady Ward, a large public-domain thesaurus, re-ranked and trimmed to the 30 most relevant synonyms for about 25,000 words. Honest limits: it is American English from the 1990s, so newer senses and slang are missing, and antonyms aren't included. The rhyme finder and the word counter are useful alongside it.
