Stock Profit Calculator
Profit, return, annualised return and break-even price on a stock trade.
About this tool
Enter the number of shares, buy and sell prices, commissions on each side, and the dates you bought and sold. You'll see the profit or loss, the percentage return, the annualised return over the holding period, the break-even price after costs and the sell price needed to hit a target return.
Working out a trade's real return
Profit is what you received from selling minus everything it cost to buy: (shares ร sell price โ selling commission) โ (shares ร buy price + buying commission). The return is that profit divided by the total cost. For example, buying 100 shares at 42.50 with a 5 commission costs 4,255. Selling at 51.20 with another 5 commission brings in 5,115, a profit of 860 and a 20.21% return. Comparing returns over different lengths of time needs an annualised figure. 20.21% over 462 days is equivalent to about 15.65% a year, calculated as (proceeds รท cost)^(365 รท days) โ 1. The break-even price, 42.60 here, is the sell price that exactly recovers the purchase and both commissions. The target price shows where to set a limit order for the return you want: 53.24 for 25%. The same arithmetic works for ETFs, funds and crypto in any currency. Honest limits: dividends you received, currency conversion costs, stamp duty or transaction taxes and capital gains tax aren't included, and past performance doesn't predict future returns. This isn't investment advice. The stock average calculator, the capital gains tax calculator and the dividend calculator are related.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate stock profit?
Profit = (shares ร sell price โ sell fees) โ (shares ร buy price + buy fees). Divide by the total cost for the percentage return.
What is a break-even price?
The sell price at which you recover the purchase cost and both commissions, so profit is zero.
What is annualised return?
The equivalent yearly return over the holding period: (proceeds รท cost)^(365 รท days) โ 1.
