Where these characters actually come from
There is no shrunken font involved. Superscript letters were standardised for phonetic transcription (marking secondary articulations), subscript exists for chemistry and mathematics โ which is why only some letters have subscript forms and the rest pass through โ and small caps likewise come from the phonetic alphabet. This tool borrows them for aesthetics, as the internet has done for years.
Honest caveats: screen readers may spell these out character by character, so keep tiny text decorative rather than essential; a few gaps are filled with lookalikes; and some fonts render odd ones inconsistently. How does small text work on Instagram?
The characters are genuine Unicode, so they paste into bios and captions like any letters โ no app or font needed, and they show for everyone.
Why do some letters not convert to subscript?
Unicode only encodes the subscript letters chemistry and maths needed. Letters without a subscript form pass through at normal size.
Will everyone see the small text correctly?
Nearly everyone โ the characters are old and widely supported. A few obscure fonts miss the rarer ones, showing a box instead.
Is small text bad for accessibility?
Screen readers may pronounce it strangely or letter-by-letter, so use it for decoration, never for information that matters.
