Rice to Water Ratio Calculator
Water, cooking time and yield for every kind of rice.
About this tool
Choose the rice type and method (stovetop or rice cooker) and enter the amount in servings, US cups or grams. The tool gives the rice and water quantities, the ratio, cooking and resting times, and the cooked yield.
Getting rice right
Each rice absorbs a different amount of water. For the stovetop absorption method, by volume, long-grain white rice works well at about 1 : 1.75, rinsed jasmine at 1 : 1.25, rinsed basmati at 1 : 1.5, sushi or short-grain at 1 : 1.1, brown rice at 1 : 2 (simmered about 45 minutes) and wild rice, technically a grass seed, at about 1 : 3. Rice cookers lose less steam, so they usually need slightly less water than the stovetop. Bring the water to the boil, add the rice and a pinch of salt, cover tightly and simmer gently without lifting the lid, then rest it off the heat for about 10 minutes to finish steaming. Rinsing removes surface starch for separate grains in basmati and jasmine; sushi rice is rinsed until the water runs clearer. Plan about 75 g (roughly โ โยฝ US cup) of uncooked rice per person; it roughly triples in volume. Two cups of white rice need 3.5 cups of water and make about 6 cups cooked. Honest limits: pan size, lid fit, altitude and rice age all change the result, so treat the ratios as starting points. Cool leftover rice quickly and refrigerate within an hour. The cooking converter and the recipe scaler are related.
