Flatten PDF

Burn filled-in form fields into the page so the values can no longer be edited.

About this tool

Drop a filled-in PDF form. The tool counts its fields โ€” text boxes, checkboxes, dropdowns โ€” and how many are filled, then flattens them into the page and downloads a new PDF, confirming that no editable fields remain. All processing happens in your browser.

Why flatten a form before sending it

A filled PDF form keeps its answers in interactive fields, separate from the page itself. That causes three everyday problems: the recipient (or anyone they forward it to) can change your answers; some apps and printers ignore the fields and show a blank form; and the values can look different from one viewer to the next. Flattening draws the current values onto the page as ordinary content and removes the fields, which is why HR departments, landlords and government portals often ask for flattened forms. Do it as the last step, after checking every answer, and keep the editable original in case something needs correcting. Honest limits: a password-protected form must be unlocked first; a field carrying a cryptographic digital signature loses that validation when flattened โ€” Electronic vs digital signatures: what each is, and what a drawn signature on a PDF proves explains the difference; and comments or sticky notes are not form fields, so they stay as they are. Fill the form with the PDF form filler, add a drawn signature with the PDF sign tool, and shrink the result with the PDF compressor.

Frequently asked questions

What does flattening a PDF do?

It converts interactive form fields into fixed page content. The text and ticks look the same, but they can no longer be edited, and every viewer and printer shows them identically.

The tool says there are no form fields โ€” why?

The PDF is already flat, or it is a scan or an image of a form. There is nothing to flatten; it already cannot be edited as a form.

Can I undo flattening?

Not in the flattened file. Keep the original filled form if you might need to change an answer.

Is my form uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is read and rewritten in your browser; the answers never leave your device.
