Oven Temperature Converter

Convert gas mark, °C, fan °C and °F, with a full oven chart.

About this tool

Choose what your recipe gives (°C, fan °C, °F or a gas mark) and enter the temperature. You get the equivalent in every system, the oven description, and a chart of all gas marks.

Converting oven temperatures

Recipes use three systems: Celsius, Fahrenheit and the UK gas mark for gas ovens, and fan (convection) ovens need their own adjustment because circulating air cooks faster. A common chart: gas mark 1 is 140°C/275°F, gas 4 is 180°C/350°F, gas 6 is 200°C/400°F and gas 9 is 240°C/475°F. Strictly, 180°C is 356°F, but recipes round to the nearest 25°F, so the tool shows both. For a fan oven, reduce the temperature by about 20°C (or 25°F), or keep it and start checking earlier: 180°C conventional is 160°C fan. The descriptions follow traditional recipe language, from very cool (meringues, gas ¼–½) through moderate (most cakes, gas 4) to very hot (bread and pizza, gas 8–9). Honest limits: many ovens run 10–20°C hot or cold, so an oven thermometer is the best fix, and published gas-mark charts differ slightly. The cooking converter and the recipe scaler are related.

Frequently asked questions

What is 180°C in gas mark?

Gas mark 4, which is 350°F in recipes, or 160°C in a fan oven.

How do I convert for a fan oven?

Reduce the conventional temperature by about 20°C (25°F), or keep it and check the food earlier.

What temperature is gas mark 6?

200°C, 400°F, or 180°C in a fan oven.

Why does 180°C become 350°F and not 356°F?

Recipes round Fahrenheit temperatures to the nearest 25°F, so 356°F is written as 350°F.
