About this passport photo tool
Pick the document you need — UK and EU 35×45 mm, US 2×2 inch, Canada 50×70 mm and a dozen others — and the frame is set to that exact size at print resolution. Drag to position, scroll or use the slider to zoom, and the blue bands show where the top of the head and the chin must fall.
The quickest way to get it right is "Mark head and chin": click the very top of the head, then the bottom of the chin, and the crop is scaled and centred so the head lands inside the allowed range. Download at 300, 600 or 1200 dpi.
Head height is what gets photos rejected
Size and background get all the attention, but head height is the most common reason a passport photo comes back. The UK requires the head, from crown to chin, to measure between 29 and 34 mm inside a 45 mm tall photo. The US allows 25 to 35 mm inside a 51 mm square, which is a wider tolerance but still one people miss.
Those are the numbers the guide bands are drawn from. Getting them right by eye is hard, which is precisely why the two-click marking exists.
What this tool cannot do for you
It handles geometry: size, head height, position and resolution. It cannot judge expression, whether your eyes are open, glasses glare, a head covering, or a shadow falling across your face — and it cannot remove or replace a background, which requires the original photo to have been taken against a plain, evenly lit, light backdrop.
The automatic checks report on background brightness, background evenness and whether the crop has enough resolution for the chosen dpi. They are sanity checks, not a verdict. Requirements differ by country and by document and change without much notice, so verify against the issuing authority's own specification. When the crop is right, tile several copies onto one sheet for printing.
