Delimiter Converter

Convert CSV, TSV, semicolon and pipe-separated text with correct quoting.

About this tool

Paste delimited data or open a file. The input delimiter is detected automatically, or you can set it yourself. Pick the output delimiter (comma, tab, semicolon, pipe or a custom character), the quoting style and the line endings. A preview table shows how the data was read, and you can copy or download the result.

Why delimiters cause so much trouble

"CSV" files don't always use commas. Excel saves with semicolons in countries that write decimals with a comma (1.200,50), database exports often use tabs (TSV) or pipes, and pasting into a spreadsheet works best with tabs. Swapping the delimiter with find-and-replace breaks the data whenever a field contains the old or new character, as in "New York, NY". This converter parses the input properly first. Quoted fields stay whole, doubled quotes ("") inside a quoted field are read as one literal quote, and quoted line breaks stay inside their cell. It then writes the data again with the new delimiter, adding quotes only where they're needed: fields containing the delimiter, quotes, line breaks or leading and trailing spaces. You can also quote every field, which some importers require, or never quote, for systems that can't read quotes. In that mode, fields containing the delimiter or line breaks can't stay exact, so they're adjusted and counted for you. Automatic detection tries commas, tabs, semicolons and pipes and picks the one that gives a consistent number of columns. Choose CRLF line endings for Windows software that expects them, and the status line warns you if rows have uneven field counts. Honest limits: detection reads the first rows only, so set the delimiter manually for unusual files. The CSV viewer, the CSV splitter and CSV to JSON are related, and CSV vs Excel: what each file really contains, and what breaks in between explains CSV quirks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CSV to TSV?

Paste the CSV, set the output to Tab (TSV) and copy or download the result. Quoted fields are handled correctly.

Why does Excel use semicolons in CSV files?

In regions that use a comma as the decimal separator, Excel uses semicolons as the list separator so numbers like 1,5 stay intact.

What does 'quote only when needed' mean?

Fields are wrapped in double quotes only if they contain the delimiter, a quote, a line break or leading or trailing spaces, as RFC 4180 describes.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Conversion runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
