Coordinate Converter
Convert lat/long between decimal, DMS, DDM, UTM and geohash.
About this tool
Paste coordinates in any common format: decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds with N, S, E or W, degrees and decimal minutes, a UTM reference such as 30U 699316 5710164, or a geohash. The converter recognises the format and shows the same position in all five, each with a copy button.
How coordinate formats work
Latitude measures north or south of the equator and longitude east or west of the Greenwich meridian. Decimal degrees write each as a single number, with negative values for south and west, so London is 51.5074, -0.1278. Degrees, minutes and seconds split each degree into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds: 51.5074° becomes 51°30â˛26.64âłN. Degrees and decimal minutes, such as 51° 30.4440ⲠN, are standard on marine charts and many GPS units. Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) divides the world into 60 zones, each 6° of longitude wide, with latitude bands lettered C to X, and gives each position as metres east and north within its zone. Central London is 30U 699316 E 5710164 N, and because the units are metres, distances on a UTM grid are easy to measure. A geohash interleaves latitude and longitude bits into a short string, gcpvj0duq for that point, where each extra character makes the box smaller, which makes geohashes handy for databases. Honest limits: every format here assumes the WGS-84 datum used by GPS. Coordinates from older maps on a different datum can be offset by up to a few hundred metres. UTM doesn't cover the poles and this converter uses standard zones, ignoring the exceptions around Norway and Svalbard. The distance between coordinates calculator measures the distance between two points.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert DMS to decimal degrees?
Degrees + minutes á 60 + seconds á 3,600, made negative for south or west. 51°30â˛26.64âłN is 51.5074.
What is UTM?
Universal Transverse Mercator, a grid that gives positions in metres east and north within 60 zones, each 6° wide.
What is a geohash?
A short string that encodes latitude and longitude; longer geohashes describe smaller areas, about 5 m for 9 characters.
Is my data saved?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
