What to write in a sympathy card
When someone is grieving, a short, sincere message means more than the perfect words. Most good condolence messages do a few simple things. They acknowledge the loss ("I'm so sorry about your mum"), use the person's name if you knew it, share a memory or something you admired, and offer specific help: "I'll drop dinner round on Thursday" is easier to accept than "let me know if you need anything". For a colleague, keep it warm but simple and mention that work can wait. For a client or customer, a brief, respectful note from the business is appropriate. Pets are family too, so acknowledging that grief matters. Things to avoid include "everything happens for a reason", "at leastβ¦", "I know how you feel", comparisons with your own losses, and religious phrases unless you know they share your faith. Don't worry about being late: a card weeks later, when the flowers have stopped, is often especially welcome. Honest limits: these are suggestions to help you start, so change any wording so it sounds like you and fits your relationship. The farewell message generator, the thank-you letter generator and the birthday message generator are related.
