The Morse code alphabet

Morse code is not a cipher and it is not a language. It is a way of representing letters as patterns of short and long signals, and its design is cleverer than it first appears: the commonest letters got the shortest codes, which is why E is a single dot and Q is four symbols.

Notice the economy. E and T, the two most frequent letters in English, are one symbol each. The rarest — Q, X, Y, Z, J — are four. Samuel Morse's collaborator Alfred Vail reportedly counted type in a printer's case to work out the frequencies, which is a remarkably modern piece of engineering for the 1840s.

Punctuation exists too: full stop is ·—·—·—, comma is ——··——, question mark ··——··, and the at sign ·——·—· was added in 2004, the only addition in living memory. The Morse code translator covers the full set and will play any of it as sound.

Timing is the whole system

This is the part beginners skip and then wonder why nobody can read their sending.

Morse is built on a single unit of time. Everything else is a multiple of it:

  • a dot is one unit
  • a dash is three units
  • the gap between symbols within a letter is one unit
  • the gap between letters is three units
  • the gap between words is seven units

Get those ratios right and any speed is readable. Get them wrong and even very slow sending is unintelligible, because the receiver cannot tell where one letter ends and the next begins. Sloppy spacing is the single most common fault in amateur sending.

Speed is measured in words per minute against the reference word PARIS, which is exactly 50 units long including its trailing word gap. At 15 wpm a unit is 80 milliseconds; at 20 wpm it is 60. The translator's speed slider works in real wpm, so what you hear is what an operator would hear.

SOS, and what it does not stand for

SOS is ··· ——— ··· — and it is sent as one continuous sequence with no gaps between the letters, which technically makes it a prosign rather than three letters.

It does not stand for "save our souls" or "save our ship". Both were invented afterwards. It was adopted in 1906 purely because that pattern is unmistakable through heavy interference and cannot be confused with anything else. The backronyms came later, as backronyms do.

It replaced the earlier CQD, which the Titanic sent alongside SOS in 1912 — one of the first prominent uses of the new signal.

How to actually learn it

The instinct is to print the chart and memorise it. This is the slowest possible route, and it builds a habit you then have to unlearn: counting dots.

An operator reading Morse at speed does not hear four separate sounds and count them. They hear one sound — a rhythm — and recognise the letter directly, exactly as you recognise a spoken word without spelling it.

The method that works is the Koch method, backed up by Farnsworth timing:

  • Learn by ear, never by eye. Reading ·—· teaches you to decode visually. That skill does not transfer.
  • Start at full speed. Learn characters sent at 15–20 wpm from the very first session, so you learn the rhythm rather than the count.
  • Stretch the gaps, not the characters. That is Farnsworth timing: send each letter at 20 wpm but leave long silences between them. As you improve, shorten the gaps. The characters never slow down.
  • Start with two letters only. Koch's method begins with K and M, drilling until you hit 90% accuracy, then adds a third. Two characters, then three, then four.
  • Practise little and often. Fifteen minutes daily beats two hours weekly.

Expect a plateau somewhere around 10 wpm where progress seems to stop. Everyone hits it. It is the point where counting stops working and recognition has not yet taken over, and the only way through is to keep going at a speed slightly beyond comfortable.

Prosigns and abbreviations

Because Morse is slow, operators developed heavy shorthand. Prosigns are letter combinations sent as one unit:

  • AR (·—·—·) — end of message
  • SK (···—·—) — end of contact, signing off
  • BT (—···—) — a paragraph break within a message
  • AS (·—···) — wait
  • KN (—·——·) — go ahead, named station only

Alongside these sit the Q codes — QTH for location, QRM for interference, QSY to change frequency — and abbreviations like 73 for "best regards", still used by radio amateurs in speech and email long after the Morse has stopped.

Where Morse is still used

Commercial maritime Morse ended in 1999, replaced by satellite distress systems. But it did not disappear.

Amateur radio operators use it daily, and not for nostalgia: a Morse signal occupies a fraction of the bandwidth of voice and can be picked out of noise far below the level where speech becomes unintelligible. A low-power transmitter that cannot be heard by voice can cross an ocean in Morse.

Aviation navigation beacons still identify themselves in Morse, and pilots verify a VOR by listening for its three-letter identifier. It has been used for communication by people unable to speak or move, blinked or tapped. And it remains genuinely useful for signalling with a torch, a mirror or a whistle when nothing else is available.
