Dog years: the real conversion

Everyone knows a dog year is seven human years, and the rule is wrong in both directions at once. A one-year-old dog is not a seven-year-old child โ it's a teenager that can reproduce. A fourteen-year-old small dog is not a 98-year-old โ plenty of terriers hit fourteen still hunting tennis balls. The real conversion is a curve, it bends hardest in the first two years, and it depends heavily on how big the dog is. Where 'multiply by 7' fails
The rule seems to come from simple mid-century arithmetic โ dogs live about a seventh as long as people, so multiply โ and as an average-of-averages it's not insane. It fails because dog aging isn't linear. Dogs compress all of childhood, puberty and young adulthood into their first two years, then age at a much steadier rate after. A linear rule underestimates young dogs wildly and overestimates old small dogs, which are the two questions people actually ask.
How dogs actually age
The veterinary rule of thumb that replaced ร7:
- First year โ 15 human years. A one-year-old dog is sexually mature, full-grown or close to it โ adolescent, not child.
- Second year โ +9 more, landing a two-year-old at roughly 24 human years: a young adult.
- Every year after โ +4 to +5 human years, with the exact pace set by size and breed.
So a 5-year-old medium dog sits near 24 + 3 ร 5 โ 39 human years โ not the 35 the seven rule says, and the gap widens from there in whichever direction size pushes it.
Why size matters so much
Across mammal species, bigger animals live longer โ elephants outlast mice. Within dogs, the relationship flips: bigger dogs age faster and die younger. Great Danes average 8โ10 years; chihuahuas routinely pass 15. Research on aging in dogs consistently finds that large breeds' adult years "cost" more โ roughly 5โ6 human years each for a giant breed against about 4 for a toy breed โ with the leading explanation being that fast early growth carries a price in cellular wear. A 10-year-old Dane is genuinely elderly (~75โ80 human years); a 10-year-old chihuahua is comfortably middle-aged (~56). Any conversion that ignores size is telling you about some average dog that isn't yours.
The DNA-clock formula
In 2020, researchers at UC San Diego compared epigenetic clocks โ patterns of DNA methylation that shift predictably with age โ between humans and Labrador retrievers, and published a formula: human age โ 16 ร ln(dog age) + 31. The natural logarithm is the interesting part: it encodes exactly the fast-then-slow curve above. It maps a 1-year-old dog to 31 human years, 4 years to ~53, and 12 years to ~71.
Worth knowing, with its caveat attached: the study used one breed, and the formula runs "hot" for young dogs compared with the veterinary consensus (31 feels old for a one-year-old Lab). Its value is confirming the shape of the curve with molecular evidence โ dogs really do burn through biological age fastest at the start โ rather than replacing the size-adjusted tables vets actually use.
Reading your dog's age
- Convert honestly. The calculator uses the fast-first-years curve with size adjustment โ enter age and size class, get a human equivalent and life stage.
- "Senior" starts earlier than people think: around 7 for large breeds, 8โ10 for medium, 10โ11 for small. That's when vets recommend twice-yearly checkups โ at the equivalent of human late-50s, not at visible frailty.
- The number is a translation, not a diagnosis. Weight, teeth, mobility and bloodwork say more about a particular dog than any formula; the human equivalent is for calibrating expectations, and it does that well.
