Video Info

Codec, frame rate, bitrate, rotation and location of a video.

About this tool

Drop in a video to see its duration, resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrate, rotation, creation date, recording device and any GPS location it contains, plus whether it's set up for fast web streaming.

What a video file reveals

MP4 and MOV files (used by almost every phone and camera) keep an index, the 'moov' box, describing each track. This tool reads only that index, so even a multi-gigabyte file opens in a moment. It reports the video codec (H.264, HEVC/H.265, AV1, VP9, ProRes), which decides compatibility: HEVC from iPhones won't play everywhere; the frame rate, worked out from the number of frames and the track duration; the overall bitrate, which drives file size and quality; and the rotation flag phones use instead of turning the pixels. Audio codec, sample rate and channels are listed too. Many phones also embed the GPS location and recording date, and the tool warns you when a location is present, because anyone you send the original file to can read it. It also shows whether the index sits at the start of the file ('fast start'), which lets web players begin before the whole file downloads. Honest limits: WebM and MKV files show basic details only; phone videos with variable frame rates show an average. The video compressor re-encodes a video, which usually removes location data, and the video file size calculator relates bitrate to size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a video's frame rate?

Drop it in. The frame rate is calculated from the frame count and track length, shown as fps.

Does my video contain my location?

Phone videos often do. If GPS data is present, it's shown with a warning.

Why is my video sideways in some apps?

Phones store a rotation flag rather than rotating pixels. Apps that ignore the flag show it sideways.

What does fast start mean?

The file's index is at the beginning, so web players can start playing before the whole file has downloaded.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is processed in your browser on this device; nothing is uploaded or stored.
